Student finance also called stufi on a website about borrowing? Yes, we receive many e-mails from students who want to request a mini loan. Sin…. after all, you have a student loan, why should you also take out a mini loan? You must apply for student finance as soon as you are 18 and you are going to study. How to apply for student finance and where, we will explain that below.
Apply for student finance
As soon as you are 18 years old and you are following a full-time course in MBO, you can apply for a student loan from the DUO. It is best if you apply for student finance 3 months before you start studying.
How do you apply for a student loan?
Applying for a student loan can be arranged quickly and easily:
- You must request a DigiD with SMS check if you do not have it yet. Your DigiD is a kind of login code for everything that has to do with the government. If you are going to apply for a DigiD, you will receive it within 5 working days.
- If you do not have this yet, buy a personal OV chip card. As soon as you receive a student loan you will receive a student travel product. You can top up this student travel product with your personal OV chip card.
- Once you have the aforementioned products, you can log in to My DUO to apply for student finance.
How much study financing do I get?
How much student finance you will receive depends entirely on your personal situation. On the DUO website you can calculate how much student finance you should receive.
Student finance and borrowing
As you can see, applying for a student loan happened in no time. Since you are entitled to student finance, it is also very wise to apply for student finance on time. You can always borrow but if it is not necessary then taking out a loan is not wise. And certainly if you apply for a DUO student loan, borrowing may not be necessary at all.
The student grant or stufi will be paid every month. The duo payment dates are different per month. All students are therefore looking forward to the stufi dates the day the student grant will be transferred. The following dates still apply for 2016.
You may be entitled to an additional grant. You can apply for a supplementary grant if your parents have a lower income and it depends on whether you have studying brothers or sisters. You can calculate whether you qualify for a supplementary grant at www.duo.nl.
If you obtain your diploma within 10 years, the supplementary grant will be a gift to your diploma. Except in the first 5 months of your student loan. In those months, the supplementary grant is an immediate gift, even if you do not get a diploma.

As you can read above, applying for a loan in addition to your student finance is first of all unwise and in many cases not necessary.
